Morbid Curiosity
It seems that half the people I know can’t keep theirs under control. And it’s pissing me off.
For the last two months, I’ve been seeing this “Washington Post Social” news story being read over and over and over. Their story entitled “Mother raped own daughter for ‘sex education’” is conveniently placed on my news feed every time a friend views it. And I’m sick of seeing it there.
I understand that this is part of another of Facebook’s initiatives to integrate every part of our damn lives into a condensed list of activities, making itself the hub for trivia about our acquaintances and therefore indispensable.
But why, why oh why am I constantly hearing about such a thing every time I log on? I haven’t read the story, despite having an urge to (I’ll admit it’s a disgustingly pulling title). Initially I hadn’t read it because I don’t like people seeing what I’ve been reading. But now it’s more about me not publicising it to my potentially unaware friends.
I’m just sick of seeing this vile story cemented in our news feeds. You’d think that there would be some sort of expiry for stories that are recommended to you like this. But nope, it seems like this will be eternally plaguing us.
Of course it had to be a shock-jock-esque story that gets this attention. It’s tragic how that kind of story is the most effective at luring an audience.
Of course, the interest in this will eventually die out after everyone ever has finally read it. But I guess the main thing to hope for is that nothing more disturbing will end up on Washington Post Social.
